Prodigy takes “Up North Trip”, pleads guilty to third gun charge

Prodigy, of the infamous rap group, Mobb Deep, caught a 3 ½ year prison sentence yesterday (October 9th), after pleading guilty in Manhattan Supreme Court to criminal possession of a loaded gun, according to the Daily News. On October 26, 2006, Prodigy and producer, The Alchemist, were pulled over by officers when the pair were seen making an illegal u-turn, and driving the wrong way on an one-way street, apparently in an effort to nab a parking spot. A subsequent search of Prodigy’s SUV, turned up an unlicensed .22 caliber firearm. Initially, Prodigy (32) denied knowledge of the gun, which was found hidden inside of a secret compartment between the driver and front passenger seats of his Chevy Suburban. But midway through his trial, Prodigy, (real name Albert Johnson), interrupted court proceedings and confessed to ownership of the gun. After his confession and subsequent guilty plea, Prodigy reached a deal with prosecutors that limited jail time to 3 ½ years, rather than the 15 normally given to felons facing their third gun charge.

In related news, this sentence caps an end to a turbulent two months for Prodigy. During a September showcase hosted by DJ Premier at New York night club S.O.B.’s, Prodigy was involved in a scuffle with fellow New York rapper, Saigon. Youtube clips show Saigon punching the embattled Prodigy in his face, before being chased out of the club by Prodigy’s posse.
